Jug and Bowl (Brig)

Jug and bowl, late 20th century AD, Clay

This jug and bowl are made of red clay and wheel-made, and have a clear glaze.  The jug has a handle attached from its neck to its shoulder and a spout attached to its shoulder.  It has a broad mouth, a narrow neck and a shoulder which tapers out to broad body, which then narrows to the base.  The bowl could be used either as a stand for the jug, or independently as a bowl, into which water could be poured.  The jug could be used to hold a variety of liquids, but the most frequent use may have been for water.  Water is, of course, the basis of human life, and the jug would have had many uses in the village for pouring water.
