Soldering Iron

Soldering iron, mid-20th century AD, Iron, steel and wood, l. 25 cm

This soldering iron was used by heating the iron pyramidal shaped head and placing it next to the metal surfaces to be soldered.  The piece of solder was then melted by the head of the soldering iron in order to solder the pieces of metal together.  The handle is made of wood in order to protect the user from the heat of the iron head and the steel shaft.  The construction of metal objects is an important part of the life of the village, and thus a soldering iron such as this has an important function in the village.  The iron was likely to have been manufactured elsewhere, and imported into the village.
