Jerrin el Tum

Mortar and pestle, late 20th century AD, Wood, d. 13 cm

The mortar and pestle are made of pine wood, and are lathe turned.  The bowl has two grooves around its body.  It is known in Arabic as a ‘Jerrin el Tum’.  It is used to produce ground garlic.  The pieces of the garlic bulbs are placed in the mortar and are ground into a paste using the pestle.  Garlic is a very important ingredient in cooking in Lebanon and other countries of the region.  Thus, this mortar and pestle is important for the preparation of food in the village.  Other mortars and pestles of different sizes exist in the village for other sorts of food preparation, including the meat and grain mixture for the hrissi.
