Electric iron

The electric iron was made by ‘Hotpoint’ and was made in the USA. The name of the maker is on the back of the iron, between two sets of three vertical lines. The electric cord is plugged in at the back of the handle. Invented in 1907, Bakelite, which is used for the handle, is an early synthetic material, which has largely been superseded by plastic. The front of the handle is moulded for a thumb grip. Such irons were used in the village for the daily ironing of clothes and other cloth items, which is central to life in the community.
